Expanded groundwater monitoring program

For those who live or own property in Gonäsheden and the surrounding area

Nordic Iron Ore AB (NIO) is planning to resume iron mining in the Blötberg mine. We are now working to develop an extended groundwater monitoring program in surrounding areas where it is possible that groundwater may be affected by future mining activities. Possible impacts include lowered groundwater levels and changes in water quality.

Prior to reopening, the water level in the mine will initially be lowered by pumping. The pumping of the mine is expected to take at least one year and no start date has yet been set.

It is difficult to predict exactly how groundwater levels around the mine will be affected, but groundwater drawdown in dug wells is assumed to be negligible while drilled wells may be more affected.

Before pumping commences, all individual drinking water wells within the assessed impact area will also be sampled for water analysis.

The purpose of the groundwater program is:

  • to get a picture of the natural variation of the water table before starting pumping
  • monitoring the impact on the groundwater level in the area once pumping has started
  • to provide a basis for the calculation of power losses in energy wells caused by lowering of the groundwater level

The NIO therefore collects data on water wells, boreholes or accessible energy wells where it is possible to measure the water surface variation.

In wells with no water abstraction, the water level can be measured manually every month with a plumb bob (a tape measure with a sensor at the end). In drilled wells with continuous water abstraction, a measuring device ("log") can be installed in isolated cases. The log continuously measures the variation of the water surface and automatically sends information on the groundwater level. The log has no impact on the use of the well or the water quality.

If you have an unused drinking water well or an accessible energy well/other borehole on your property and do not mind us measuring in it, we will gratefully receive your tip by email or phone. As a property owner, you will have access to all measurement data from your well.

You are also welcome to contact the undersigned with questions about the groundwater measurements. Other questions about NIO's activities should instead be sent to info@nordicironore.se.

Yours sincerely
